As my deadline for the documentary comes closer, I wanted to go back to the beginning to talk about what inspired me to pick this topic of school violence against teachers for my documentary. The Ann Maguire case.
The story was about a 15-year old 6 foot 2″ boy, Will Cornick who calmly walked over to his 61-year old, 5 foot 2″ teacher, Ann Maguire and stabbed her in the neck and back.
The boy kept stabbing her as she tried to escape. Cornick later admitted to murdering her once he had turned 16.
He had planned this murder and had told one of his friends about it, 4 months in advance, saying she “deserves more than death, more than pain and more than anything that we can understand.
The boy showed no remorse at all and was content with his actions.
This story has carried on to let other children push the boundaries and test their teachers. Stories of children bullying their teachers is not as common but still does happen even if not usually reported.
For a teacher to be killed by a student is a shocking and rare occurrence. But data shows that pupil violence against teachers is a daily problem for teachers around the country.
This inspired me to bring awareness to the fact that teachers need support and help to deal with such situations so that they feel safer in their workplace too.
